Family Literacy Night at Bridger School
Thursday, March 4, 5:30-7pm.
Bridger School is planning a “Dr. Seuss PJ Party” to encourage family literacy in a fun, engaging environment. There will be pancakes for dinner, accompanied by green eggs and ham. The kids will also be making oobleck and other fun art projects, as well as reading books written by Dr. Seuss. The organizer, Kat Sandor, could use your help in many ways. Look through the various positions and contact her if you’re interested in participating: ksandor@impactnw.org.
1. Pancake flipper extraordinaire. Do you know how to rock a griddle? We will be making a LOT of pancakes, and if this sounds like something you would like to do, I will not turn down your help.
Time Commitment: 5:00-6:15pm
2. Gourmet Green Eggs and Ham Chef. If you’ve always wanted to try making this gourmet breakfast dish, now’s your chance!
Time Commitment: 5:00-6:15pm
3. Oobleck Master. If you’ve ever made the stuff, you know how messy it can be. Basically cornstarch and water combine to create one of the most unique substances known to man! If you’re not afraid of rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty, this just might be the job for you!
Time Commitment: 6:00-7:00pm
4. Creative Fisher. Based on the book One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, students will be creating their own stuffed paper fish. If you are artsy, we need you here to help instill creativity in the little ones, and perhaps limit the amount of glitter they use…
Time Commitment: 6:00-7:00pm
5. Dramatic Reader. After the families eat, my goal is to split up the kids and parents, so the parents can get a brief presentation from Bridger’s Reading Specialist about ways to encourage their children to read more at home. While the parents are in this meeting, the students will be in the gym, being read to by you! Can you handle the tongue twisters of Dr. Seuss books? Do you like being around a small group of children and engaging them in a story?
Time Commitment: 5:45-6:30pm
Portland Rescue Mission
Friday, February 26
The Community of Adsideo – a start-up ministry integrating college students, the Sellwood community, and the homeless – will be helping out at the Portland Rescue Mission this Friday (Feb 26). Contact Dr. Williams if you’re interested, or for more information: bwilliams@warnerpacific.edu.
Hot Chocolate Outreach
Wednesday & Thursday nights, 6pm
Join Warner students and staff and serve hot cocoa to the homeless in downtown Portland. Meet at the Coffee Shop between 6-6:30. The group returns around 8:30pm. Contact Kristi Pratt (kpratt@warnerpacific.edu) or Sarah Wood (swood@ warnerpacific.edu) for more info or questions.
Breakfast at O’Bryant Park
Every Sunday, 7am
On Sunday mornings, you can join a team of volunteers to serve breakfast to the homeless. The location is O’Bryant Square in downtown Portland, just off the Morrison Bridge. The group meets around 7am and sets up to serve a warm breakfast to those living on the street. For more information contact Eric Michaelson at emichaelson@warnerpacific.edu.
As always, if you have questions or ideas, send me an email or stop by my office in Schlatter. And let me know of other service opportunities you would like to see highlighted to the WP campus.
