Heather McLendon
AmeriCorps VISTA Service Learning Coordinator
Student Programming and Internal Relations
Heather graduated from Warner Pacific College in ’08 with a B.A. in Communication Arts and a minor in Theatre. She has lived in the Pacific Northwest for 18 years, but her insatiable wanderlust has taken her to several places throughout the world, some of which include France, Mexico, Scotland/England and Switzerland. Next on her list is Peru, followed by Russia.
Social justice is a passion for Heather. Ever since taking the course ‘Christian Social Concern’ during college, she has challenged herself to a life of service, awareness and advocacy. She continually wrestles with the question, What does it mean to be a responsible global citizen? Heather is an NPR junkie and coffee addict (independent coffee shops are the best). She plans to study the philosophy and ethics of media/journalism in graduate school.

The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we as Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined.

Conner Peckham
AmeriCorps VISTA Service Learning Coordinator
Special Operations and External Relations
Conner graduated from Warner Pacific College in May of 2009 where he received his B.S. in Business Administration and Social Science. He believes that his experience at Warner helped shape his desire to serve people in need. A native Oregonian, Conner grew up in Aloha, but has since learned to appreciate other cultures in his travels to Mexico and Rwanda. He hopes to travel to Africa again soon. Conner enjoys playing music and sports, spending time with friends and family, and a good piece of cake.
Sarah Wood
Student Leader, Outreach Coordinator
Sarah is a sophomore this year majoring in Elementary Education. She has volunteered in Preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade classrooms through church and school for many years and looks forward to having her own classroom once she graduates. Sarah enjoys singing and listening to great music, playing board games or cards, relaxing and reading a good book, spending time with friends, and being outdoors with nature—whether she is hiking, rafting, playing ultimate Frisbee or looking up at the stars! You can also find Sarah on the volleyball court here at WPC.
One of Sarah’s passions is to serve people: the student community at Warner, the ‘least of these’ in Portland, and those who reside in further regions of the U.S. and other countries throughout the world. ‘I think that the impact we have on people is far greater than we realize, so I want to make every effort to positively and intentionally impact, serve, and build relationships with love.’ She applied to the Service Learning Team to take that passion and desire to serve and use it to motivate and inspire others to think beyond themselves. Her hope is for her fellow students to recognize how great of an impact they can make within our campus, our city, our country and our world—one day, one experience, and one smile at a time.
